Care Guide | Leather
Your ATHOLHU leather bag is crafted from premium top-grain leather. With proper care, it will develop a beautiful patina and last for years to come.
Daily Care
Regular Cleaning
- Wipe your bag gently with a soft, dry cloth to remove dust and surface dirt
- For light stains, use a slightly damp cloth and allow to air dry naturally
- Avoid using harsh chemicals, alcohol-based cleaners, or abrasive materials
Handling
- Avoid overfilling your bag to maintain its shape
- Keep away from sharp objects that may scratch the leather
- Handle with clean hands to prevent oil and dirt transfer
Protection
Water & Moisture
- Leather is naturally water-resistant but not waterproof
- If your bag gets wet, blot gently with a soft cloth and allow to air dry away from direct heat
- Never use a hairdryer or place near radiators
- Consider applying a leather protector spray for added water resistance
Sun & Heat
- Avoid prolonged exposure to direct sunlight, which can cause fading
- Keep away from heat sources that may dry out or crack the leather
- Store in a cool, dry place
Conditioning
Leather Conditioner
Apply a quality leather conditioner every 3–6 months to keep the leather supple:
- Test the conditioner on a small, inconspicuous area first
- Apply a small amount with a soft cloth in circular motions
- Allow to absorb for 10–15 minutes
- Buff gently with a clean, dry cloth
Recommended Products
- Use pH-neutral leather cleaners and conditioners
- Avoid products containing silicone or petroleum
- Choose products specifically designed for top-grain leather
Storage
When Not in Use
- Store your bag in the provided cotton dust bag
- Stuff with acid-free tissue paper to help maintain shape
- Store upright or lay flat in a cool, dry place
- Avoid plastic bags, which can trap moisture
- Keep away from other leather items to prevent color transfer
Long-Term Storage
- Clean and condition before storing
- Check periodically and air out every few months
- Avoid storing in humid environments like basements
Understanding Natural Leather
Natural Variations
Top-grain leather is a natural material. The following are normal characteristics, not defects:
- Slight variations in grain, texture, and tone
- Natural markings, veins, and pores
- Color variations between batches
- Development of patina over time
Patina Development
With use, your bag will develop a unique patina — a natural darkening and softening of the leather that adds character and beauty. This is a sign of quality leather and proper aging.
Troubleshooting
Scratches
Minor scratches often blend in naturally over time. For deeper scratches, gently rub with your finger — the natural oils may help minimize their appearance.
Stains
Address stains immediately by blotting (not rubbing) with a clean, dry cloth. For stubborn stains, consult a professional leather cleaner.
Odors
Air out your bag regularly. Place baking soda in a small pouch inside the bag overnight to absorb odors, then remove and air out.
Professional Care
For deep cleaning, restoration, or significant damage, we recommend consulting a professional leather care specialist.
